Background,
Refugees in Uganda
Uganda hosts 1.4 million refugees, of whom more than 1 million come from South Sudan. The majority of them are settled in West Nile; sub-region bordering South Sudan. Uganda has laws and regulations that promote the safety and wellbeing of refugees in line with the Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework (CRRF). They receive small plots of land to build houses and grow crops on. They have the right to free movement and work, to establish businesses and to access health care and education. However, the large number of refugees puts enormous pressure on the state’s infrastructure and the surrounding environment, particularly forest land and water resources. The majority of the South Sudanese refugees are farmers back home, and as they have limited access to urban livelihood options in Uganda due to the location and distance from major cities of the settlements, many of them opt for agriculture-based livelihoods in Uganda as they did at home.
NRC Uganda is urgently looking for a Permaculture consultant to build capacity of farmers and disseminate permaculture approaches in West Nile. This is expected to increase food security and livelihoods options of both refugees and host communities in West Nile (Adjumani and/or Yumbe districts), at the same time improving environment restoration and preservation in refugee hosting areas through the application of permaculture approaches.
