This position is a Global Health Corps (GHC) fellowship role. GHC is a leadership development organization focused on building the next generation of diverse, disruptive global health leaders. The Youth Health Services Officer will work with the Youth and Adolescent Health Advisor to establish youth-friendly services at supported health facilities. The Youth Health Services Officer will also be tasked with ensuring the smooth transition of adolescents and youth receiving care and treatment services at the facilities by supporting their adherence to medications and clinic visits. The Officer will facilitate the development of personal, social, and educational growth skills amongst adolescents and young people to help them reach their full potential in society.
About
The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) seeks to prevent pediatric HIV infection and to eliminate pediatric AIDS through research, advocacy, and prevention, care and treatment programs. Since 2000, EGPAF has been supporting prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) and HIV and AIDS care and treatment services in Uganda. EGPAF Uganda is a leading provider of technical assistance to Uganda’s Ministry of Health and supports clinical service delivery at the facility, regional, and national levels. The organization works closely with the Ministry of Health and other partners to increase access to comprehensive, high-quality HIV prevention, care and treatment, and tuberculosis (TB) identification and treatment services among women, children, and families living with and affected by HIV and AIDS. EGPAF Uganda currently supports services at 234 health facilities in 13 districts of the Southwest Region. EGPAF works hand-in-hand with Uganda’s Ministry of Health to formulate evidence-based policies supporting all persons affected by HIV and actively participates in national HIV-related technical working groups and advisory committees. EGPAF plays a central role in the revision and adaptation of the national PMTCT and anti-retroviral treatment (ART) guidelines. EGPAF Uganda has also actively implemented operations research to ensure scale up of best practices in HIV clinical management in-country.
Responsibilities
Leadership
- Facilitate the formation of peer support groups in the health facilities with a high number of adolescents and young people enrolled
- Work with the rest of the program and health facility teams to identify areas for linking adolescent and youth to opportunities for skill-building and income-generation activities
- Mentor, coach, and support individual adolescents and youth on personal, social, and educational growth and encourage greater social inclusion
- Support and run arts-based activities, outdoor education, and sporting activities as part of the overall establishment of the youth and adolescent-friendly services
Implementation oversight: planning and monitoring
- Conduct assessment to identify the needs of adolescents and young people, and support staff at sites in the delivery of adolescent and youth-focused services
- Prepare monthly and quarterly plans for provision of activities for adolescents and youth at the supported sites
- In close collaboration with the M&E Team, develop tools that are necessary for tracking progress and issues related to implementation of activity plans
- Conduct regular site visits for technical support and implementation progress review at sites
Documentation and reporting
- Document and share lessons learned and best practices related to project implementation
Skills and Experience
Items indicated with an asterisk (*) are required
- Bachelor’s degree*
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in social science, social work, nursing, public health, or other related field; Additional training at the post-graduate level in management of reproductive health programs
- Demonstrated experience with youth programming, education, and/or counseling*
- Knowledge of adolescent sexual reproductive health policies and strategies*
- Experience with researching, writing, and/or facilitating training with adolescents*
- Experience conducting basic M&E in order to improve program efficacy*
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of adolescents and youth
- Ability to support adolescents and youth in various settings, including outreach work
- Experience in counseling and supporting youth, adolescents, and their families
- Report writing experience
- Excellent inter-personal skills
- Desire to work with youth populations on key health and life skills
