Plan International has been operating in Uganda since 1992 and is implementing a diversified programme portfolio in 19 districts including Tororo, Luwero, Kamuli, Kampala central, Lira and 15 districts in Northern Uganda.

Plan Uganda works closely with more than 25 national and international partners from the civil society and has good collaboration with government institutions. Together we contribute to improving the lives of children in the following areas: Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD), sexual and reproductive health, education, participation and governance, disaster risk management, water and sanitation, economic security and child protection.

Over the 22 years of operation in Uganda, Plan has invested over US$300 million in support of Uganda’s national development programme priorities. Through this investment the organization has reached millions of needy children, families and communities in the 19 districts.

The Role

Each Country Program is led by a Country Director who is Plan International’s lead representative in country with authority over all activities taking place. As Country Director Uganda you will be required to develop strategies at country level that align with Plan Internationals global vision and purpose within the prevailing context of that country as it impacts on children. You will also lead a highly motivated team and ensures legal compliance, implementing a well-funded programme, ready and able to respond to emergency and development needs of the most marginalized children.

Do you have what it takes?

In this demanding and varied role the successful applicant will require demonstrable knowledge on the key debates in development and emergency response methods and effectiveness, particularly about rights-based programming for child rights.

Proven, demonstrable experience in the development and management of effective and motivated teams, including distance management is essential.

Knowledge of Uganda, the geopolitical factors affecting child-poverty in the country and the political, social and environmental opportunities for change is an advantage.

Proven negotiation skills with Governmental and non-Governmental actors is essential to succeed in this position

Excellent written skills in English both written and verbal are required

Type of Role: 5 year fixed term contract

Location: Based in the country office located in Kampala with extensive local and some international travel, requires ability to travel frequently to remote areas

Reports to: Regional Director – Region of Eastern and Southern Africa

Salary: Circa $75,000 USD per annum plus benefits
