UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.
Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.
And we never give up.
For every child, a fair chance
Uganda is one of the over 190 countries and territories around the world where we work to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease, and discrimination place in a child’s path.Together with the Government of Uganda and partners we work towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals, the objectives of the Uganda National Development Plan, and the planned outcomes of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework.

How can you make a difference?
Under the supervision of the Nutrition Specialist, the consultant will support program (KNP) development and identify and share lessons learned from the implementation of KNP activities and research studies.
Background
There have been significant investments by the government of Uganda (GOU) and development partners to improve security, infrastructure and basic services in Karamoja over the past decade. Despite these investments, the sub region continues to have the worst economic indicators in Uganda. The extreme poverty in Karamoja has serious impacts on health, wellness, and the societal coherence of the region. The poor market access, increased poverty induced sales of food, cultural and social resistance to change increase the risk of malnutrition among children in the sub region. Despite the increased investment in the health services, poor WASH and health seeking practices, increase the risk of diseases associated with malnutrition in the region. Undernutrition and food insecurity prevail in the sub-region and continue undermining the health and education opportunities and thus minimise the likelihood of significantly transforming livelihoods for years to come. The prevalence of global acute malnutrition (GAM) in Karamoja have remained unacceptable (above 10%) over the last five years despite the implementation of high impact nutrition interventions at facility and community levels.
A number of information gaps have been identified, such as lack of effective integration of nutrition into the health system, unreliable estimates of coverage and burden of acute malnutrition due to lack of context specific data on acute malnutrition incidence, weak community-based interventions, lack of understanding of the extent to which anaemia is caused by iron deficiency, poor complementary feeding practices despite current SBCC interventions and a lack of a gender-sensitive nutrition program. UNICEF and WFP will carry out the Karamoja Nutrition Programme (KNP), with support from DFID, sustain ongoing nutrition actions and address the above knowledge gaps.
During the inception phase of the programme, UNICEF and WFP have outlined a number of assessments and studies that will form the basis of the new KNP programme. The knowledge management consultant will support the identification and synthesis of information derived from ongoing KNP activities and research studies for knowledge development and drafting of the new KNP proposal.
