The ISS is seeking to appoint a Consultant to support the development of an initiative that aims at supporting policy makers with evidence-based research on innovation in conflict prevention practices in Uganda. The consultancy, from January-April 2018, involves extensive engagement on research outputs (especially through field research), analysis and writing; networking with relevant organisations, governments and civil society organisations, and providing presentations and briefings. The Consultant will report directly to the Senior Researcher at Peace Operations and Peacebuilding Division.
About the Projects
The Consultant will be engaged in the following project:
- Mapping Conflict Prevention Innovation in Africa is a project funded by the government of Canada, implemented in partnership with the Igarapé Institute. The project aims at supporting decision-makers and practitioners, through evidence-based research and advice, as a means to enhance conflict prevention practices in Africa, and
Overview of duties
Support the development of field research in Kampala;
Assist in the planning, preparation and execution of fieldwork in Uganda;
Assist in the identification of interviewees, arrange meetings and conduct interviews in Kampala, together with a project Researcher;
Assist in the practical arrangements for interviews in Kampala, including language assistance;
Facilitate contact with stakeholders in Kampala, through e-mail and telephonic contact;
Take interview notes and help compiling interview notes, with the project Researcher;
Follow up with relevant stakeholders after field research;
Support Researcher in writing 1 Op-Ed on the topic,
Support Researcher in writing 1 case study report on findings of case study, including with its focus on gender;
Support Researcher in writing 1 Strategic Note on the findings of the study, and
Assist in the development of other products.
Overview of requirements
Knowledge of human security in Uganda, with special interest on conflict prevention, peace operations and/or peacebuilding;
Experience in planning, conducting and disseminating results of research projects in Uganda;
Knowledge of/and relationships with government and non-government Institutions in Uganda;
Good research and analytical skills with publications record;
Good English and French language skills;
Constructively function within a team, self motivated, able to work independently, under pressure and meet deadlines, and
East African citizen with in-depth knowledge of Uganda
Consultancy will be until 30 April 2018, and fees will be paid based on pre-established donor agreement.
