Established in Afghanistan in 2009, Samuel Hall is a field-based organization with offices in Kabul, Nairobi and Dubai. We work primarily with humanitarian and development partners, donors, private sector partners and academic institutions. Our areas of expertise include monitoring and evaluations; economic development; migration and displacement; governance and rule of law; education; urban studies; and marginalized communities.

Our teams of field practitioners, academic experts and local interviewers have years of experience conducting evidence-based research. We use our expertise to balance the bottom-up [people’s needs] and the top-down [policy needs] requirements of development, enabling us to:

  • Acquire a firm grasp of the political and socio-economic context,
  • Design data collection methods and statistical analyses,
  • Apply cross-disciplinary knowledge to provide integrated solutions,
  • Recommend strategies for humanitarian & development practitioners.

About the Opportunity

Samuel Hall is looking to recruit Project Managers, External Consultants and/or Research Assistants with a particular expertise for a variety of short and long-term project opportunities in East Africa. Positions will be primarily based in the region, including in Nairobi, Kenya.

Project Manager

In charge of research, analysis and management, our Project Managers execute and oversee all aspects of a project for the public or private sector unit, in close collaboration with field teams and directors. Candidates need to demonstrate strong analytical and writing skills, as well as a commitment to working in challenging situations. They should have prior experience of managing research projects and consulting missions.

External Consultant

Responsible for providing proven geographic, technical or sector-specific knowledge in support of or to lead research projects, our External Consultants bring not only their decades-long experience but also the assurance of having all technical assets and cross-cutting skills on board for a successful deliverable.

Research Assistant

Students and recent graduates are selected each year to work in one of our offices in a wide variety of support roles, in both research and operations. Applicants must be pursuing their Masters/Doctoral degree or be recent graduates, and have a proposal for submission to the company outlining perceived areas in which their skills could be best used.

Profile:

  • Advanced University / minimum Master’s degree in Social Sciences and Public Health;
  • Proven experience working in research in East Africa;
  • Proven experience work on at least one of Samuel Hall’s areas of thematic expertise (M&E, migration and displacement, economic studies, governance and rule of law, education, urban studies, protection & marginalized communities);
  • Strong interest in supporting the policies and operations of public and private sector actors in humanitarian and development fields through field-based research;
  • Programming experience in complex emergencies and post conflict settings;
  • Solid research and analysis experience;
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and writing skills including proven experience in drafting reports;
  • Experience in, facilitating consultations, meetings and workshops;
  • Strong English report writing skills, fluency in Kiswahili and knowledge of Somali a plus;
  • Prior experience supported by references and writing samples.

Duration: OPEN

Starting date: SEPTEMBER 2015 (exact date TBC)

Location: East Africa

Monthly salary: TBD based on profile and past experience
